Choosing The Best Abrasion Resistant Coatings For Floors Made Of Concrete

For the last several decades, protecting concrete floors has become a well planned process that uses protective coating. The main reason for this is offer the slab protection from contamination as well as other benefits like easing maintenance. In buildings, floors are the most abused surfaces, whether the building is residential or industrial. Floors are subjected to all types of abuse, ranging from chemical attack, impact, thermal shock and abrasion. Floors made from concrete are not designed to take such continual abuse. Classification of coatings for concrete floors is by thickness, appearance, finish and polymer type. By following the selection process to the letter, the thickness together with appearance settings can be narrowed down. The classification according to polymer type can be somewhat hard, thus requiring help when making performance comparison and data review. Formulations for coating using polymers come in their thousands, with each of those varying from another significantly.

Polyurethanes and epoxies are the most commonly utilized polymers. Data and performance vary significantly in each type. Urethanes are used for high build to thin film coating, have remarkable wear and abrasion resistance, excellent gloss retention together with good chemical and stain resistance. Some urethanes possess excellent elastomeric properties and are extensively used in waterproofing applications due to their low permeability. A majority of urethanes coating contain solvents.

Formulations of epoxy used in coating floors are usually non volatile, have good chemical and abrasion resistance, good adhesion together with remarkable mechanical properties. Its applications include bonding adhesives, crack repair, concrete coatings, toppings and overlays. Of late, combinations and urethane/epoxy hybrids have provided polymer materials with outstanding thermal properties, stress relieving and impact resistance.

What determines the type of coating needed for a concrete floor is abuse. One is exposure to chemicals, with the kinds of chemicals and exposure being of great importance. Materials are different when offering resistance to chemicals, facilitating identification of exposure to be a priority. Commonly occurring spills and splashes are not that critical when compared to constant immersion.

Thermal shock or temperature fluctuation is a vital condition that must be put into consideration when choosing abrasion resistant coatings. Thermal shock like steam cleaning of the floor might lead to a loss of bond.
