A funeral director is a special type of individual. They are bestowed with a keen presence of mind even when all around them people are influenced by powerful feelings. Funeral directors can function effectively even if all around them people are already high strung; they are very great assets in helping you achieve an organized funeral service for your departed family member. Powerful feelings threaten to overcome an individual who suffers from the death of a loved one. The time is not good for making decisions. Still, the bereaved will be called upon to arrange what are essential for the loved one’s interment. The funeral service preparation is one essential thing to look into. The bereaved may pass on the responsibility of making this arrangement to a funeral service director.

The main task of a funeral director is to make all preparations for the funeral service up to the handling of the body at the cremation or burial.

The essential duties of a funeral director can be categorised into four broad heads, which are transporting the dead body, readying it for final service, making arrangements for people to assemble and pay their last respects to the departed and finally the actual cremation or burial of the body as per the preferences or tradition of the family.

The responsibilities of a funeral director vary from publishing obituaries in the print and electronic media to arranging for a hearse to carry the body, in addition to other planning tasks like deciding the timings and place for conducting the funeral service etc. In addition, the funeral directors also have to make sure that the decorations and flowers are in place. Besides this, they have to prepare the body for the ceremony by washing and embalming it and arrange transportation for the relatives assembling for the ceremony.

A funeral director has a lot of responsibilities besides the above mentioned ones, including doing the essential paperwork formalities as required. He helps the family secure a death certificate. He also makes arrangements to settle any claims of insurance, and helps the family members in applying for seniors’ burial benefits. He can even arrange for the transfer of any annuities or pensions that the family members are entitled to get, and provides tips to the family on how to manage funeral expenses.

He also has to associate with a number of experts to accomplish his jobs in a proper and systematic manner. He has to interact with physicians, pastors, coffin makers and florists, all with equal ease.

Lastly, it is important for funeral directors to give some extra time and provide comfort and relief to the bereaved family of the deceased, in order to help them tide over their grief. Though some funeral directors neglect this task, it is a crucial aspect in a profession like this.
