Solar Power – The Energy of the Future
By James Cooper
Most power generation stations in the US and all over world are using carbon-based fuels to operate and generate electrical energy. Ordinary fuel has been employed as a source of energy so long as man has learned to create power. Normal fuel has been around for ages and when man started to use these sources of energy no one thought about the consequences. Fossil fuels will run out and there will be a shortage of it in the near future. This lack in fossil fuel will have its affect on our daily live and various industries. Today we see a few of these affects already, carbon-based fuel costs are raising and electric energy is getting more dear. Although normal fuels are far more depleted, the requirement for carbon-based fuels will continue to be here and won't dip in the near future. To solve this shortage of fossil fuels we're going to need to go looking for other possibilities for our energy demand.
Luckily, alternate energy sources are becoming more popular. As an example, locations with high water falls are experimenting with building hydro-electric energy generation stations and have been pretty successful. Other locations with high wind speed utilize wind powered turbines that may convert wind energy into electricity
Solar energy is also one of the power sources that is gaining in interest. Solar energy has continuously been growing. Today solar power is generally employed in the USA and the advantages are numerous. Our solar electricity source, the sun, its life span is gauged to be another 4.5 billion years. It is fair to say that this power source is almost never-ending.
Pros and Cons of Solar Power
Just like every other types of energy resources, solar power has its arguments.
Pros:
Pollution-free.
Solar facilities can be run with little extra input or maintenance.
It is limitless. As discussed earlier, most of the inhabited areas here on Earth can be reached by sunlight.
Cons:
Even though it is limitless, non-tropical locations can receive little sunlight. So, power that will be produced in these locations is a minimum.
Only viable during daytime therefore unavailable during night time.
Solar cell technologies generate direct current (DC) power which must be converted to AC current (AC) power used in distribution grids.
Once widespread development of the use of cheap solar panels is materialized, we can expect that each household or industry in the world will now be powered by solar power. It's not merely a dream, it's going to be a dream made reality.
