The Manner The Sand Palms Of Dubai Were Built From Marine Sand

By Guest | December 13, 2009

A little way off the shore of Dubai are four beautiful islands in the form of giant palm trees: Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira, still under construction. Each consists of necks of land stretching from a trunk abutting to the Dubai seashore, and capped further outward by a long seawall for protection. It must have needed very many geotechnical consultants to make the necessary analyses of the site’s seabed, each geotechnical consultant a specialist in seabed engineering. Because creating an island from loose undersea sand will require a lot of engineering expertise even before anything can be put down on paper, prior to making any tangible construction.

The Palm Jumeirah Crescent or jetty is only 13 feet higher than the sea height at low tide, and ascends from 34 feet of water at its deepest site. Its engineers contend that it is elevated enough not to sink in the rise of the sea level should global warming really occur, or any tsunamis that might develop in the Persian Gulf. The jetty is formed from rocks taken from the mountains. At its bottom is sand wrapped by a geo-textile or woven fabric to inhibit the sand from flowing out. Weighing down this ‘wrapped’ sand is a stratum of one-ton boulders, over which two strata of six-ton stones sit to form the top part.

The isthmuses extending from the middle avenue are created also from sand taken from the seafloor and then vibro-compacted to bear structures. Palm Jumeirah was created from 3,257,212,970.389 cubic feet of sand. Vibro-compacting is performed by filling up the sand with water then shaking it via drills to make the sand move more thickly. initially a probe is buried into the sand below the surface through water filling and vibration. As the probe reaches its desired depth, loose sand is tossed down into the cavity made by the vibrator probe. Thus a more solid zone of sand is made, enough to hold up structures. However, vibro-compaction may be appropriate only in uncontaminated sand where fine clay matter constitutes only 15% at the most.

In eery peninsula or frond are two rows of residential land or structures for the really rich, and anybody can purchase his property there. Palm Jumeirah is expected to have 120,000 homeowners and laborers, plus a different 20,000 tourists each day. So it is not truly a small island where privacy can be obtained, but a gigantic self-sufficient sub-urban area of the really, really wealthy. There are today people living in the islands: real residents, vacationers, businessmen and workers giving finishing touches to some portions of the built up areas. A six-lane avenue today functions as the transport artery in and out the peninsulas, but in the last stages, inhabitants will also be serviced by a monorail.

Palm Jumeirah and the other man-made islands illustrate what contemporary engineering supported by a lot of money can do. While reclamation from the sea to create islands may not be a novel idea because it has been done numerous times before, the project’s enormous size causes it so.

Connor R. Sullivan recently met with a skilled geotechnical consultant for an engineering project he is working on. He hired a couple of skilled geotechnical consultants for a new project.
