A funeral can either be a State or a family ceremony, and it is held in the memory of the deceased person. It entails many customs and rites that are specific to the culture of the dead person.

Most Christian funerals have rites that are divided into three essential parts – visitation, funeral and finally, the burial. The first two parts, which are the most important ones as far as rites and rituals are concerned, are discussed below.

The first and foremost ceremony is visitation in which the body is put in a casket for family and friends to see and pay their last respects to the departed. The body is dressed in the finest clothes and adorned with jewellery. Some cultures require embalming the body for the visitation, while others don’t.

Visitation often includes a visual display of photos of the deceased by the family members or a display of articles that were valued by the deceased during his lifetime. Some families also play a video or slide show of the deceased.

This service is succeeded by a memorial service, also known as a funeral, which is held normally at a church. The casket with the body in it is brought to the church in a hearse, surrounded by a funeral procession of mourners. Then the coffin is carried with its floral arrangement and housed in the church.

The service usually entails reciting lines from the Bible or the Holy Scriptures and praying for the deceased. Religious songs are also sung by the mourners in chorus. The pastor presiding over the service gives a comforting speech, followed by tributes or eulogies given by relatives and close friends of the departed, who speak of the latter’s good qualities and achievements. Sometimes, the people assembled are allowed to view the dead body for one last time before it is taken for burial. Church bells are also sometimes rung after the service.

The completion of second part, which is the funeral, marks the beginning of the third stage of the ceremony, which is burial, and the body is taken through a funeral procession.
