Trophies Down The Ages
Trophies not only stand for victory but also provide people with memories of the accomplishment and act as a souvenir for them. It keeps the owner enthused and encouraged for a long time to come. The trophies are hence designed to highlight the field of achievement of the person it will be presented to, like a trophy with the image of a car for an automobile racing event.
Historically, trophies stood for victory against enemies and were built in the battlefield by the victor. The practice began in ancient Greece when the battle descriptions were engraved on the enemy’s weapons and were exhibited by the winning army as marks of victory. These were given as offerings to the deities who had brought them success. In fact the very term trophy is a derivative of the Greek word ‘tropaion’ which means ‘defeat’.
Ancient Romans had a different way of raising trophies to their victories. They erected tall pillars and columns that bore an engraved trophy at the top for people to see and admire their victory. After sometime, the kings and emperors started distributing chalices to the best athletes in the kingdom.
Designing a trophy is not as easy as it might look at first. Like any other artistic task, it involves considerable market study, needs analysis and detailed study of materials which can be used. A trophy should not just be remarkable but also strong enough to remain safe for years as a prized possession of the winner.
Nowadays, a trophy may be given to signify victory in a sport, academic excellence or even success in one’s selected career. The market is filled with trophies of different shapes, sizes, designs as well as with various ways of inscriptions. Down the years the traditional metal atop a wooden base design has morphed into glass, gold, fibre or silver frame, or crystal trophy. Customers now have a vast range of trophies differing in shape, size and design to select from. With the number of options available, buying the right trophy for an event is not a hard job anymore.
