Binding Machine Tips

By Jane Snurtl

It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned pro when it comes to binding and binding machines or a beginner, there are a few things that can make your binding projects easier. Comb binding machines are pretty easy to use, but there are a few things you can do to make them run smoothly and in doing so you will avoid some common hassles when it comes to your binding projects.

Insert small stacks of pages to be bound in the binder. It’s tempting to try to force your binder to do larger stacks of pages, but it’s better for your machine to do smaller numbers of pages at a time. Adding all of your pages in one go can actually make your machine not function well. Be patient and bind in smaller batches, this is better for your machine and your stress level.

Know your machine. Take into account the capacity your machine claims to be able to handle. Some machines have a punching capacity of 25 or more pages. Just because your machine says it has a punch capacity of 25 sheets doesn’t necessarily mean you should use 25 sheets every time. Give your machine a break. This will save on the wear and tear and make your binder last longer.

Some machines have a margin setting that is adjustable. Adjustable margins allow you to set the distance from the edge of the page where the holes will be punched. You can experiment with this setting to get the best results for your project This takes some experimentation to get right. Binding your projects too far from the edge of the sheet will make it difficult to turn pages.

Make sure your machine’s waste receptacle is kept clear. Emptying the tray frequently will cut down on the wear of your machine and keep it running smoothly. A build up of paper in the machine makes punching more difficult and eventually can even lead to breaking some of the punching dies. This simple thing can lead to much more efficient and easier binding.

These simple tips can help you preserve your binding machine and keep it in good working order for years to come. Using your machine with care will give you many completed projects and you will get a lot of use out of your binding machine.
