You might be thinking this sounds great but why would people pay for cleaning when they can do it themselves? In fact, this is the dilemma of most service based operations. However, the cleaning business comes with a built-in yuck factor. This is the underlying basis which a lot of clients don’t want to deal with and that is obviously great for your business.
Since you own your own cleaning business, you’re happy that clients find housework distasteful. This will keep them coming back to the services you provide. That’s the beauty a domestic cleaning operation – you get repeat customers because things always get dirty all over again. And these customers are loyal because they know you are a trustworthy person.
Beyond the regular and scheduled clients, the cleaning business is also what you make of it. You can expand or you can stay small as a one person operation. It really is up to you and your ambition.
If you wish to expand, then the best way to go about it is to leverage what you already have, which is your existing customer base. In this business, networking and recommendations are vital. If your clients are willing to put in a few good words for you to people they know, then your reputation will precede yourself. That’s the power of free advertising.
When you get new clients, there’s always going to be the trust issue when you first start cleaning for them. There’s a lot of the concern with theft and that’s why personal recommendations will go a long way to putting them at rest. After some familiarity, things should be fine and they will become your regular. In any case, it’s just as much a hassle for them to build trust in someone new and to instruct what they want as well.
On the side of the cleaner, given the issue of being in a strangers house and the implications it could bring up if something goes missing, it’s also best if you get liability insurance or get bonded. This is as much or your protection as it is the clients’ protection.
Overall, the start-up costs for a personal house cleaning business is quite minimal. You just need insurance, transportation and cleaning supplies. It might be a tough to get new clients at the beginning but remember it’s all about word of mouth recommendations and networking. Therefore, try your social network first and see how that goes. Once you get started, you can make a lot of money with house cleaning jobs.
