Companies Offering Reseller Hosting

By Logan Oulman

A ‘reseller host’ is a phrase which refers to multiple types of hosting on the internet. This is not a strict definition of the type of web hosting being offered, but actually describes how the provider is offering it to you.

A hosting reseller operates by procuring large blocks of web space from large web hosting companies and then sells off chunks of this accumulated space to their own customers. Basically, they offer the services offered by a Web Hosting business, but they are not required to develop and pay for the costly hardware, and they do not have to take care of it either. Many start-up web hosting businesses like this business model for this reason and it is also popular with companies that are in possession of a large portfolio of sites and web design firms that want to also bundle in hosting for their clients.

A Reseller Host may offer deals on Shared, Dedicated or VPS space (this is further discussed in part 2.) For the most part, customers of resellers will be able to procure cheaper hosting services because the reseller will purchase the space in bulk at a discount. The primary downfall of purchasing hosting from a reseller is the fact that your hosting company is beholden to the company which actually provides the hosting space. While the more advanced resellers will offer advanced support services to go with their product, this still means that if you have a problem that the reseller cannot solve by themselves they will have to get in touch with the larger company and this will greatly slow down the whole support process for you.

For instance, Reseller Hosting will only be beneficial to Dave if he chooses to offer Hosting to his customers, or if he wants to grow his company by having a portfolio full of websites. If Dave does not intend to do one or the other of these tasks, he should most likely stay with Shared Hosting. This is the most popular kind of Hosting and one that will provide him with the benefits he needs.

As someone who needs to host one simple website, the enhanced performance, support and control that shared hosting offers is superior to hosting a website through a series of resellers, which does not provide as many options or immediate assistance.
