Fundamentals Of SEO
By Ricky Lim
A search on any search engine for a popular keyword displays thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of results. In such a scenario, how a website gets itself among the top results of a search for a particular keyword is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Getting to the top of a web search means more traffic for your website, resulting in more business, and that is why SEO has attained such prominence in the last few years.
Black hat and white hat are the two basic categories of SEO techniques. Black hat SEO entails somewhat unaccepted ways to make a website appear at the top of the search rankings. Whereas, white hat SEO works within the framework laid down by the search engines and focuses on making use of widely accepted techniques.
The search engines in the past matched a webpage with the search for a given word by making use of Meta data, which is generally embedded in the code of a webpage. However, these days a significant number of search engines use highly sophisticated algorithms, entailing the use of over 200 distinct factors to decide on the results.
SEO consultants constantly try to guess the importance of different factors that play a role in the search algorithms and stay abreast with the changes that search engines make. This information helps them improve upon the SEO techniques for their clients so that they stay competitive for selected keywords. For the earlier algorithms, which utilized only the Meta data and web site content, the optimization technique used was to bring the desnity of a keyword on the page to a proper level and dealing with the Meta tags of the page.
Although these factors are critical even today, the popularity of the web page is now more significant as far as the search engines are concerned. The popularity of a particular web page is decided by how many other pages link to it. It is more like a democratic process as each link to the web page can be seen as a vote. Due to this, SEO these days requires substantial work outside the site such as distributing free content in exchange of links to the site and establishing a presence on blogs and other interactive mediums online.
The critical aspect of SEO to be always kept in mind is that it is not a one time activity. SEO strategies are constantly getting updated to the changes occurring in the field of online search. That is the reason why it is so critical to engage a seasoned SEO consultant to assist you.
