Studying For Your CCNA? Read These 3 Types Of CCNA Books To Prepare Well

By Francis Teo

Using CCNA books to study on your own for the difficult CCNA exam is definitely a very good alternative to taking a regular classroom based course with an IT school or other Cisco authorized training centre. There are a lot of CCNA materials out there, and if you are new to networking certifications, you might not be sure what materials to buy. There are in general 3 types of books you will need if you want to study for the CCNA in a comprehensive manner:

1. CCNA self-study books – These are complete courses in book form and can be used as an alternative to the classroom-based courses. They are also extremely useful as a study aid for those who have already committed to taking a classroom class. They are highly detailed and provide a full coverage of the topics required for the exam. They generally do not assume that the reader has any experience and thus are very useful for beginners.

Because Cisco updates the CCNA syllabus on the regular basis, mainly to introduce new technologies but also to remove those topics which are no longer relevant in today’s context. It is therefore important to get a self-study CCNA book which is relevant to the latest revision of the CCNA exam, and this is something you might want to note when buying such books.

2. Exam summary books – These CCNA books are used as a last minute revision aid and can help greatly when you need a way to recall the core facts needed to pass the exam. My recommendation is that you only use these books only after you have understood and read all the important topics in detail which are required for the test. In general, these books do not cover as much detail and tend to go wide rather than deep.

Especially if you are new to networking certifications and do not have any hands-on experience yet, do not depend on these books solely for your exam preparation. Use this books after you are done and you will find that they will help greatly with remembering all the important facts right before the exam.

3. Practice books – This type of CCNA books have a few sets of practice exams designed to provide a mock exam before the real thing. By using these books are answering the mock questions, you will have a higher level of confidence going into the actual exam. The best CCNA exam practice books come with test engines where you can actually answer the questions on a computer simulation, mimicking the experience of a real exam. This simulated experience will put you in good stead for the actual exam.
