A Professional IT Strategy Could Be Rather Important

By Emma Mathers

IT strategy, or Information Technology strategy is a term used to describe the complete plan that consists of objectives; tactics and principles related to how a specific organization will make use of its technologies. These strategies focus primarily on the actual technology and at time it also includes the individuals who manage them. These strategies are normally in a documented format and are directed at the organizations decisions concerning technology.

A few other aspects that are focal points are efficient expenditure for technological aspects, correct use of the available technology in order to make good use of incorporating them into an organization. Overall the chief area of focus is ensuring that the company, its employees and customers are achievement the full benefit of the used technology. Strategies relating to this part of the business cover a period of 3-5 years.

Most companies decide to rather put their strategies down in writing in order to effectively have it followed through in daily operations. These documents or plans have to be understandable and flexible to allow for unforeseen circumstances that could arise. As businesses transform so should these strategies and their specific priorities to ensure that the newest technology is being employed to aid workers with their jobs.

Budgeting; enhanced technology and differential needs all play a part in how these strategies are incorporated and adjusted to fit with each company. Perfect plans should allow employees ease of use and eliminate any confusion in their set-up. Additionally when looking at the design there are four areas that are looked at in the planning process.

Firstly the main organizational process and information requirements that ones IT system has to be able to support. Secondly, the key equipment needed in order to support the related activities, such as desktops, servers, laptops as well as communication systems. This will also extend onto the operating systems and application software that is used for the various functions of departments within the organization.

Software related issues will also include whether or not standard packages are going to be incorporated or specific ones need to be designed. Another important feature to take into consideration is whether the applications have to have twenty four hour support seven days a week. Decisions such as whether the technical department will be in-house or outsourced are all also very important.

Numerous companies operate without any technological strategies. Not placing a plan in motion makes it necessary to make decisions “on the fly”. This might not be good as disorganization could result in very costly mistakes and ultimately cause employees to be frustrated.

On the contrary, having a clearly documented IT strategy will give every organisation the capability to make appropriate cost-effective related decisions. Most agree that there is no exact time to think about setting these specific plans into place; it varies from one company to the next. But when done early, the full potential of the business will be reached by the correct use of technology and the associated tools.
