Broadband Users: Which One Are You?

By Charles England

Are there best broadband deals out there? There certainly are, but you have to know what you’re doing and what you need. In other words, one size does NOT fit all. To find the best broadband deals for you, you first have to figure out what type of broadband user you are. This, in turn, will help you figure out the different broadband deals out there, so that you find the best broadband package based upon price, usage, and your own particular needs.

What kind of broadband user are you? Are you:

A light user?

If you’re a light broadband user, you rarely use your Internet and/or only use it for basic needs, like receiving and sending email, occasionally surfing the Internet for information, and perhaps occasionally downloading small files. If this is the case, you may prefer and broadband and phone package. You’re generally on the Internet for less than an hour every day, and you often won’t use your connection regularly. If this is you, you only need a moderate connection speed; in addition, you shouldn’t have to worry about going over any data restrictions. This should allow you to buy from among the much cheaper broadband deals.

A moderate user?

Most Internet users spend two to three hours a day online, either downloading files while they do something else, and/or actively working on the Internet. If you’re a moderate user and spend to three hours a day online, you may spend your time doing social networking, viewing videos online, participating in live chats, and so on.

If you are a moderate user, your monthly data allowance should be ample and it should be at least 10 GB or greater. Your connection speed is somewhat important, because you’ll need it for the best interactivity, but in most cases, a service that gives you 8 MB per second will certainly be adequate.

A heavy user?

People who use the Internet heavily are really the ones who are looking for the best broadband deals. If you’re a heavy user, you spend a lot of time online, and may download files that are several gigabytes or bigger in size. You’ll spend a lot of time online, may watch a lot of TV programmes online, and may also play online games significantly. If you work at home, you’re a heavy user simply because you conduct a lot of business online, and/or you may also be a frequent user of Internet shops.

If you’re a heavy user, you’re someone who is very much in need of the best broadband deals that aren’t going to restrict your monthly download limits (or will do so only once you’ve exceeded a significant cap), and you’ll want a fast connection speed as well, usually cable. Alternatively, you can get ADSL connections that are 24 MB per second, which may be adequate.

Other things you should know

If you live in a household that has several Internet connections or a lot of Internet users, you’ll need to pay special attention to Internet service providers’ limitations. It’s also probably a good idea to sign up for a package that gives you top speed broadband and high usage caps; that’s because even if you yourself may be a light or moderate user, others in your household may push that ‘light’ usage into the realms of heavy usage. The best broadband deals will accommodate ALL users in a household, so make sure you take everyone into consideration if you have more than one person in your household.
