Broadband routers are a combination of Ethernet switches and Network Address Translators. It can sometimes be a mixture between an Ethernet hub and a NAT. Most broadband routers have a dynamic host configuration protocol server. They are also supposed to have a Domain Name Service proxy server. Broadband routers protect their LAN lines through a hardware firewall so people from the outside can’t get in to their files.
Routers have to use a Wide Area Network Port, also known as a WAN. A WAN is a port that connects to a cable to get broadband service. Currently the Internet is the most popular broadband service.
There are different ports that will support different cables and modems. Check to make sure you are using the right type of device to make the data transfer.
Most of the newer broadband routers are a combination of the broadband router and Ethernet switch. They do this so that there can be multiple Ethernet ports open at once. This allows more than one computer to form a LAN, or Local Area Network, and can be very beneficial.
Multiple ports allow the computers to connect to the WAN port with the Internet. This allows for great LAN performances. That means that you can share files or printers, or other LAN developments.
Ethernet hubs and switches are connected to routers to expand a LAN. If there are a lot of Ethernet ports open it is easy to expand. Some ports may need crossover or straight-thru cables in order to do this, however.
USB connections are a popular way to connect to an Ethernet port. Through a USB connection, users are able to connect computers to a LAN. Many connections now use wireless LAN options as well.
Ethernet ports can have a serial port instead of a WAN port. Serial ports can be connected to external dial-up modems. Dial-up modems are usually only used now as a backup for the DSL service.
