Bluetooth Technology Allows Motorcycle GPS Units To Talk To You With Helmet Headset

By Joe Kidson

The Bluetooth technology of some GPS motorcycle units will even allow your receiver to talk to you through a helmet mounted headset and give you directions just like your Mom used direct your Dad on those summer vacation rambles.

The handlebar-mounted GPS motorcycle receiver is available with approximately four inch touch-panel screen, you can also get wrist or hand held units, which would not be so safe to use at 60 MPH.

It might be a good idea to consider if you have the quality of biking skills which will help you to stay attuned to your GPS motorcycle receiver at the same time that you are zipping along unfamiliar roads at 60 or 70 MPH. If not, then wait until you do before going the GPS motorcycle unit route, and stick to taking map breaks when necessary.

A handheld or wrist GPS motorcycle receiver, with its vibration-proof battery, will keep a log of your travels which you’ll want to upload to your computer just in case you would like to go on that trip again. It won’t get you maps, but you can again use your computer to create a map and program it to the GPS motorcycle device.

An essential part of touring is knowing where you’re going, and if you don’t feel you should trust your instincts when you’re on unfamiliar ground, your navigational aid should be a vital part of your equipment. There’s nothing worse than getting lost.

As you will find with most things in life, you can get a large range of options in most GPS units. From the bare-bones basic to top of the line.

There are three types of GPS that are suitable for use on a motorcycle. For starters, there are the basic hand-held types used by hikers. These offer an easy-to-use interface, and can be linked up to a laptop computer that can assist you on planning your trip.

The housing has been designed to handle the rigors of life on two wheels, and is weather-proof.

The third type of GPS unit that motorcyclists tend to use are the GPS / PDA hybrids. The upside is that it doubles as a communications device, has a large screen and is portable.
