Medical Computer Solutions And Threats

By James Pynn_

It has to be said, the marriage between computer technology and the medical profession has been a harmonious one for the most part. The more innovative technologies open the door to more detailed patient analysis, the more informed doctors become. Ideally, this should mean more accurate diagnoses and healthier patients. To be sure, the inherent power of medical computers is staggering.

Of course, on a long enough time line a marriage tends to produce offspring. In this case, medical technology and medical science have produced a new field of study: health informatics. Also known as medical informatics, this field is concerned with how the use of computers and information science can better aggregate, file, and retrieve health-related information.

The timely retrieval of up-to-date health information, especially as it relates to certain treatment methods or disorders, is meant to help professionals better diagnose disorders and diseases. This process involves accurate and timely communication between medical facilities, EMT units, doctors, and related professionals. Of course, this could mean a level of patient privacy could be compromised.

In an effort to offset this possibility, the United States Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPAA) in 2006. HIPPAA is meant to protect citizens from undue privacy breaches and sharing violations. It’s one thing for your medical records to be shared between specialists or medical professionals, but what happens if your information is shared with insurance companies? What happens if marketers get a hold of your information?

To say that computers are playing an increasingly important role in the medical field seems rather trite. They have always played a major role in medicine. The history of the medical profession is entwined with the rise of mechanization and technology. Now, medical professionals can provide timely treatment by referencing up-to-the-minute patient information. The trick will be to see if its sustainable in the face of privacy issues.

A powerful medical computer is one that can access the medical data you need, when you need it. Design your own medical computer platform today.
