How To Become A Successful Cisco Network Engineer – 2 Things To Note

By Francis Teo

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

What should you do once you’ve obtained your CCNA certification? For most people, the logical next step is to get a job as a basic networks engineer either designing or supporting the network infrastructure of a small to medium sized company. Many people might also be looking to switch career paths from a more general role in information technology to a networking specialization. In either case, you should note these 2 things to improve your chances of success:

1. Hands on configuration experience – The CCNA is arguably the most common network certification in the market now. Just being certified doesn’t really mean much to many employers these days. The number one thing that sets a good Cisco network engineer from a bad one is his or her experience with hands-on configuration and troubleshooting of Cisco networks.

Thus, it’s important to master the hands-on configuration and troubleshooting of real Cisco equipment. The best way to do this is to buy 2nd hand Cisco equipment off eBay or other place and install it either in the office or at home (employer permitting). A home or office lab will allow you to have practice on a non-live environment before you apply your skills in the real world on live equipment.

If you find that building your own home or office lab is unlikely, another good way is to use a Cisco network simulator. An example is dynamips but there are several other commercial simulators available on the market. One downside of using Cisco simulators is that you will not be able to obtain hands-on experience with the cabling and other physical layer troubleshooting tasks.

2. Current technology – You should keep yourself up to date with the current technology, in particular what your future employer is using. Knowing whether a company is using mainly Cisco equipment or perhaps a mix will definitely be advantageous to your job application.

Please note, however, that some companies consider this information to be a commercial secret. If you obtain the information unethically, you will not only not get the job but word will probably get around pretty quickly. Please only do this if the information is freely available and they are willing to tell you what technologies are being used. If you have this, do take the opportunity to brush up on the relevant technologies before going for the interview.
