Why You May Want A Monitoring HTTP Solution

By Barak Weichselbaum

The World Wide Web is an important tool for lots of different purposes. E-commerce is big business, and anyone with an e-commerce website knows how important it is to maintain constant uptime. Also, website developers often need to troubleshoot bugs in their web applications. Monitoring HTTP is something that website owners and website developers can both use to help them out.

Several monitoring tools are available at no cost, and some of them are even open-source. There are many different commercials tools available, as well.

Protocol analyzers aren’t automated, and generally don’t have a lot of bells and whistles. They also don’t decrypt encrypted HTTPS traffic. But, they are handy when you need to troubleshoot a site that doesn’t use encryption, or when just monitoring to see if any sensitive information is leaking out in an unencrypted form. If your website is under some sort of attack, you can use them to analyze what the attacker is doing.

Several different no-cost protocol analyzers are available for just about any operating system. Users of either Linux or a BSD-flavor operating system will see some of these in their distro repositories.

Other solutions will keep a constant watch on your website, monitoring for uptime and any problems that may develop. If a problem develops, most of these programs can send an automatic notification via email, instant message, or page.

Your favorite search engine can help you find lots of both commercial and free monitoring tools for just about any operating system. If you use either Linux or BSD, some of these tools should already be in the distro’s package repository. If you need help with the free programs, some vendors will supply it commercially.

A relatively new type of monitoring tool comes as a plug-in for certain web browsers. These can be useful when you don’t require the complexity of full network monitoring setups. Some of them can decrypt encrypted website traffic, making them appropriate for troubleshooting web apps at banking or e-commerce sites.

If you’re in need of a monitoring HTTP solution, your favorite search engine will find you plenty of choices.
