The Many Faces Of PDAs

A handheld computer is called a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). As it carries out the basic functions of a computer and fits into the palm, it is also called a palmtop computer. Its palm size makes it very easy to carry around, and use anywhere and everywhere. It combines the functions of a media player, mobile phone and web browser. The Internet, intranet and extranets can be accessed through Wi-Fi or Wireless Wide-Area Networks where available.

PDAs are deployed for various kinds of applications across businesses and government organizations. Some of the commonly found applications are package delivery and supply chain management in warehouses, medical treatment and record keeping in hospitals, facilities maintenance and management and ‘wireless waitress’ applications in restaurants and hospitality venues. It is also deployed in meter reading by utilities, route accounting, parking enforcement, capital asset maintenance, and access control and security. Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) devices such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Smart Card Readers, Bar Code, magnetic stripes, voice recognition, biometrics and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) are being incorporated into the PDAs. This is to assist in identifying objects, collecting data about them as well as entering the data automatically.

Initially the PDAs featured simple Personal Manager Applications. These usually included diary, scheduler, appointment calendar, a notebook program, address and phone book, some games, To-do list, Calculator, Organizer, Alarms, and World time. Later simple camera, text readers, editors and game emulation were included. Further such programs as handwriting recognition software, common reference material, Notepad, Drawing application, Finance software, File manager, Voice recorder, Data synchronization and Printer connection were included. With many areas became enabled with Wireless Wide-Area Networks or Wi-Fi, web browsing and Email became possible along with all other things that one can do with the Internet such as online purchase, online banking, e-book downloading and many more. Other software programs such as Word processor, Spell checker, Custom dictionary and Spreadsheet added to its functionality.

The PDA market is expanding rapidly with numerous models in the market offering a variety of features.
