The Technology That Should Be In Your Pocket – USB Flash Drives

By Holger H Nikhil

The modern day societies require that we are technologically savvy. We really need to know and understand what is going on the computer world to be up-to-date. And this is now true no matter how old we are or become. So you and everyone else should be prepared for all gadgets related to your computer. This includes the accessibility to USB flash drives.

USB flash drives, sometimes called thumb or pocket drives due to their small stature, are the ultimate electronic data storage devices. These devices originated from the bulkier and less-evolved floppy disks.

These electronic storage devices are officially titled, universal serial bus (USB) flash drives. The term universal is a very accurate description due to the fact that they can be used on nearly every modern electronic device. Storage space for a flash drive varies from 50 megabytes (MB) to 256 gigabytes (GB).

These USB dependent memory devices are called drives, but technically they are not. This is because there are no moving parts within these systems. The computers’ operating system recognizes these devices as storage systems similar to the hard drive data storage system.

Flash drives are composed of a tiny circuit board that is imprinted with a circuit connected to the USB interface. These boards are encased into small metal or plastic housing units that are either retracted or covered by a removable protective covering.

The first generations of thumb drives were made as the USB 1.0 specification. This version had the capacity for a 12 MB per second (MBps) data transfer rate for high speed devices and a 1.5 MBps for low speed. The newer generation, which is the one that is more commonly found, is the USB 2.0. For the fast data transfer, this version can go as high as 480 MBps, which was a significant increase over the original.

One of the most appealing aspects of the flash drive over their ancestral floppy disc counterparts is the range of style and packaging alternatives available. Depending upon your personal style, you can find novelty USB made to look like just about anything from lipstick to a toy car. They can also be combined or built into other useful products like pens and watches.

While it is true that most people are becoming computer and tech-savvy, not everyone is onboard for some of the most basic acceptable features. To be honest, if you use a computer on a regular or even semi-regular basis, you need to have some sort of data storage device. And in case you didn’t know, floppy discs are out of style.
