Transport Driver Interface Is Known As TDI

By Barak Weichselbaum

This is an interface that is used by drivers. An interface is a link that allows two systems to communicate. The TDI drivers could be a Windows 2000 server and redirector. These are used in turn to communicate with Network Transport Protocols, otherwise know as NTP. The reason to use this protocol is so that services are independent of the network transport protocol.

This driver was developed by Microsoft to increase function and flexibility when comparing to other interfaces like NetBIOS or Winsock. There are specific ways when you address protocols, send and receive datagrams, detect any disconnects, read and write streams, to name a few functions. Network protocols such as TCP/IP, NetBIOS, and AppleTalk are implemented by transport providers.

Included in the principal features is the high level of granularity. This means that since the interface is granular it can accommodate the conventions from network interfaces. When the interface does not need a specific address format this is called flexible addressing scheme. Different address formats can be identified and used.

There is also the Plug and play event notifications. This allows the transports for Windows 2000 or later the ability to alert their clients of PnP events. One of these events could be that an underlying NIC is available.

In the system power-state change notification feature the client is alerted to be ready to maintain power to a connection. The extensible communication allows the client to submit request to transport to a core driver that has not been specially outlined. A helpful feature is that the driver filters data from the network.

There are other options available such as the data transfer modes, the internal buffering, the management options and the quality of service to name a few. If you are a network administration be sure to familiarize yourself with this interface as it supports most of the Windows transport providers. It is also very functional in developing incredible firewalls.

Are you needing a TDI filter for your server? Well, if you do we have the latest TDI source code that can help make it happen.
