Understanding The Importance Of Hurricane Preparedness

By Scott David Rodgers

Hurricane preparedness is vital to surviving disaster. Many lives and injuries can be saved, every year. Know what to do and how to prepare. Here are things that you can do.

Keep track of the weather. As soon as June arrives, it is time to monitor the weather. Storm conditions can change suddenly. These powerful, large storms usually give several days notice. However, you must be aware of them, to take the right action. There are many free storm alert services, to sign up for. You should also check you local weather, every day. This is easily done with radio and television. Read the local weather in your newspaper or check the many online weather sources.

Emergency supplies

As soon as storm season starts, be prepared. You may need more drinking water than you think. One gallon per person for each day, is recommended. A week supply for a family of five, is thirty five gallons. Water is inexpensive. You can easily stock op on it. However, do not wait until a storm is on the horizon. The store shelves will empty fast. Remember that pets and livestock need water too. Have some for them, also.

In a bad storm, you may be without power for some time. Do you live on the coastline or in a vulnerable area? You might consider owning a portable generator. Start your generator up on a regular basis. Make sure that you have plenty of gasoline for it, too. In disaster, there may not be any gas stations open for days.

You cannot have too many batteries, either. These are essential for flashlights, radios, and portable video games. Remember, you will not be able to recharge your batteries without electricity. Have several convention batteries on hand. Of course you can buy a solar battery charger. However, it will be much slower than normal.

Do you have a good source of emergency lighting? Oil lamps and candles, never go out of fashion. Make sure that you have plenty of lamp oil and matches. Keep some matches in a water tight container. You may have flooding or a leaky roof to deal with. Battery powered florescent lamps are another good choice for emergency lights. They will provide good and efficient lighting.

If you live on the coast or in a mobile home, have a plan. You never know when you will have to evacuate. The more planning you have, the less chance of panic. Have a list made up of what you will bring with you. This will take some of the stress out of evacuation. Make sure that you keep in touch with local news. This way, you will know where the closest shelters are at. You may also look for pet friendly shelters. Have your pet ready also. You will need food and leashes and such for them.

Hurricane preparedness is an important factor in surviving disaster. Better preparation translates into a safer and easier time. Many injuries and lives can be saved with some advance knowledge. Stock up on emergency food and water. Keep plenty of candles, matches, and emergency lighting. Work out a complete plan of action for storm time. You never know what will happen.

Being prepared for various possible events is a wise action for homeowners and businesses. Types of plans include SPCC plans for oil and gas companies and fire pre-plans are a good idea for just about any type of organization.
