Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

When you launch a website, finding the right domain name can be as important as choosing your company name. In fact, in a number of cases companies have changed their company name to their website domain name because people recognized it easier than the company name and made for easier brand identification.

The first thing you need to do is check to see if your company name is available, do this by going to the address bar in your browser type in http:// your company name followed by .com if it comes back as “site not found” it may be available Will wil need to go to a domain registrar like go daddy to check further. If it comes back with a site then look around if it is some thing that you would not mind being identified with then you can contact the owner and offer to purchase other than that keep looking.

The following will help in choosing the right domain.

Does not matter what you sell your domain name will impact your company, choose something that you would not mind as your company name as it will be identifying you on line. In fact your company name may be the perfect domain for you your customers already know you by this and they are most likely typing your company name followed by .com direcly into their browser to find you.

How many letters should I have in my domain ?

Your domain can be up to 67 characters but short names are best, around the 20 characters is best, domains can not have spaces in the and their is not point in including capital letters as they are not case sensitive. In choosing your domain remember shorter is better, longer domains are harder to recall and get misspelled, remember people have to type it into their browser so keep it easy for them.

Types of characters you are allowed to use in your domain

Special characters are allowed in domains but each domain registrar is different, they all allow underscores and hyphens (-). Mostly you should stay with letters and numbers. It is best to stay away from clever or quirky spelling and special characters as people will misspell your domain. You can use numbers but I suggest only if it is part of your brand, having a 4 instead of “for’ as part of your domain may be clever, but people won’t remember and don’t normally search using a number they simply won’t find you.

Google and other search engines are good at their reading domains that have terms made up without dashes such as “howtotlaunchawebsitesite.com” so don’t be concerned if your domain is this way computers, sort this well. I try not to have dashes as they are not “people friendly” and when people forget them they finish up on your competitors site, if you can avoid dashes in your domain do.

Look for descriptive words in your domain, people will go to domains that have terms like carcleaners.com because it appears to immediately have what they are looking for. Check your domain for bad word combinations otherwise you could finish up with a domain that sounds OK a company like “speed of art” but when put into a domain is certainly different. as “speedofart.com. You dont want a domain with a completely different meaning.

Domian names with brands are great, but only if it is yours, you don’t need the hassle of copyright issues

Find someone who does not know your business to look at your domain and comment as a final check. If it looks good then go and get it registered.

If you could not find what you want a facebooks fan page could be the answer. You can get a facebook fanpage in your company’s name and get more than 25 likes, it then can be assigned unique facebook domain, it does come with some restrictions though, more about this on my site. All the best for launching you website
