Skype is a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service that offers users a number of advantages over land based telephones. Using the broadband connection on a PC as a phone line is what VOIP systems do. Although you can purchase a dedicated VOIP handset, it is not necessary for most types of calls.

All you need is a PC, headset comprising of earphones and a microphone, and you are ready to go. Skype can be downloaded free off the internet and once you’ve set up your user profile, you can start connecting with your fellow Skype users. There may be time limits for international calls even though calls to other Skype users are not charged and the rates for calls to non-Skype users are lower than normal land line rates.

Video calls on PC, with a headset and webcam, to other Skype users as well as to mobile phones are also facilitated by Skype. An application for smart phones is what Skype also has and these include iPhone and Blackberry. If you use your mobile Skype-to-Skype to make calls, then you also won’t use your monthly minutes.

For businesses that operate globally, a very useful tool is the facility that Skype has for conference calls. You can make calls to other Skype users on PC or mobile if you do not have a Skype handset since you will need a handset if you want to phone a land line.

Even though not all of Skype’s services are free, they will also save you money unlike the traditional telephony rates. To receive calls from land lines and mobile phones that are not using Skype, you will have to pay a small fee. Text messaging and voicemail also incur a small fee.

A number of payment options are offered by Skype in order to cover these fees. With these prepaid options, you will be allowed to pay an amount upfront. When you have used up that amount, you will have to pay again. You can buy Skype credits and pay the fees with those or another alternative is using monthly payments. In most parts of the world, a prepaid Skype card is available as well. Payments via Paypal, Moneybookers, and major credit cards are also accepted by Skype.

Skype offers a quality VOIP service, with calls dropped very rarely, no lagging or freezing of video, and generally good quality audio and video. Resulting in considerable savings are free calls on Skype especially if you do business on a global scale or have family and friends in all corners of the world.
