What Is The Deal With Speed Dating?

By Kyle Watts

Yenta was a matchmaker in a popular musical. She introduced men and women of the small village in Russia, who would eventually marry and live a happy life. Today life is not that simple. People aren’t interested in finding mates anymore. They are looking for soul mates and those dreams never come true.

The town matchmaker has since faded away with the horse and wagon, but a new generation of mating game has taken its place. One girl meeting one boy at a time is too slow for our lightening fast worlds of texting, tweeting, and virtual everything. Love letters have been taken over by email. Breakups are announced on blogs before the ex even knows she is single again. And, the matchmaker of old has been replaced by speed dating. The twenty first century has made meeting people into an obstacle course. It is not an intimate conversation, but a parlor game to a timer. Singles are flocking to speed dating, if they are extroverted. The History of Speed Dating

The term “SpeedDating” was used from a Jewish organization. They are credited with starting the trend. It was launched as a way for single people within the faith to meet and marry.

Speed dating became a secular event in the late 1990′s. It was first held at an eatery in Southern California. It didn’t take long for the trend to spread east. Proponents of the events believe that this is a fast and easy way to meet a lot of people in a short period of time. For those who have busy lives, speed dating fits in perfectly.

How Speed Dating Works

Speed dating is held at local restaurants, hotels, or bars. You can join without pre-registering if you’d like, but they are usually well planned. Make sure to look over the rules. They’ll vary slightly.

Usually all of one sex will be stationed at a seat. The opposite sex walks table to table. A timer is set and the hopefuls take a seat. The fun then begins. You will have about 5 minutes to make a short meaningful conversations. If there are a lot of people, you’ll have a shorter amount of time. Although one minute sounds like an impossibly short period of time, studies have shown that people make up their minds almost immediately as to whether they have met their future spouse.
