Hydroponic Gardening And Environmental Concerns : Solution To Many Questions

By Clayton Deshazo

The chemicals involved in gardening are a huge danger to the environment. They cause air and soil pollution and thus add up to the list of various environmental concerns. Hydroponic gardening is a method that was devised years ago in order to significantly cut down on the quantity of these harmful chemicals used. Hydroponic gardening and environmental concerns go together.

Hydroponics is a method of growing vegetation through the supply of minerals which can be done either through water, gravel, mineral wool or coconut husk. This method works on the principle that soil as a medium is not vital for the growth of a plant. It is the minerals present in the soil that support the growth of the plant and if these minerals are present in any other medium the plant is able to absorb it easily. Practically any kind of plant can be grown through this method.

This gardening is not only environment friendly but also farmer friendly. Imagine the amount of labor a farmer has to put in to main the texture of soil, water the fields frequently, supply fertilizers, weeding regularly and in planning crop rotation and the distance between two consecutive plants to ensure that each plant and crop gets the required nutrients.

Small holes on the lid help air circulation as well as provide space for the plants to grow. This solution can be changed periodically and also aerated with the help of an aquarium pump. The level of the solution is maintained in a way that the roots of the growing plants are not fully submerged in the solution.

It is an advantageous methods. Harmful chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides that are required in conventional gardening do not form a part of hydroponics. Also, more importantly, the levels of minerals in the medium can be monitored, controlled and adjusted according to the requirement.

The solution containing the essential nutrients are fed into these containers and the plant roots are partially immersed in this. This method is advantageous as there can be many variants introduced depending on the needs of a plant. The solution can be replaced, it can be aerated and the light and the amount of carbon dioxide can also be controlled.

If taken good care, hydroponic gardening provides a crop yield which is far better than the one which can be obtained through regular farming techniques. It is also a neat clean and healthy practice which relieves a little burden off the environmental concerns already existing. Scientists are constantly on a look out for improvising this method even further in a way that this kind of gardening can completely take over regular farming in order to ensure a good quality healthy plant product for the masses irrespective of the season.
