The world today is wrought with many risks which threaten the safety of all living organisms and the environment at large. This was hardly the case hundreds of years ago before the advent of industrialization. Such purposes may include ability to tolerate extreme temperatures, weight or pressure, withstand the effect of corrosion from agents such as chemicals, or resist abrasion. Some may also integrate special features such as the ability to seal themselves to walls and floors made of all kinds of materials.

A good system during emergencies is one that deploys very fast with minimal requirement of resources like personnel and equipment. This can mean the difference between a good outcome after an emergency and a disaster. It all comes down to the quality of planning done in advance. Some advance planning will incorporate considerations such as decontamination of people after a gas leak or oil spill.

A cost benefit analysis should be carried out to determine the budget to be allocated towards this system. If a risk occurs habitually then it would be prudent to invest in a permanent containment feature. This dramatically reduces costs as one does not need to keep buying portable spill containment berms every time there is a menace. Following these ideas can mean the difference between a good and bad experience after a disaster.
