Spill Containment Pallets Provide Safe Handling Of Dangerous Materials

By Andrea Davidson

Chemicals will leak from the containers they are delivered and stored in. That is a fact of commercial chemical handling life and there is nothing to prevent it. The only thing that can be done is make sure those leaks do not become the spills that require massive, non production action. That is the reason spill containment pallets were thought of and put into use in most chemical handling areas.

One of the many problems that happens is, not only the chemical spill that can impact people, but this also creates a situation that requires certain procedures to performed. The EPA has identified what has to happen and that is, first, a shut down of the production until an all clear is announced. This is intrusive and costly to do and several reports are necessary before it is done.

The thing that happens when a spill does occur brings an alarm to the general area. People are to shut down their equipment and move from the area. Barriers will keep other people out and material that is not contaminated can be removed as well. No production can resume until everything is made clean and safe for all.

The members of the hazardous material team will be called to come in, gowned the correct way, and deal with this substance. The report about the spill will have been sent to the EPA even as the team gets to work. This report is required to state what happened and what chemical is involved. There are other requirements to list things that can be done to prevent this from occurring in the future.

The procedures call for an absorbent material to be used to gel the chemical and, hopefully, make it inert. The cleanup, after this has been scrapped up and placed in a specially marked container for disposal, is commenced. Neutralizer is used to make sure there is no residue and a complete cleanup is accomplished. Testing will then be administered to ensure the cleanliness and neutrality of the area.

An alternative to the scenario that requires all of this non productive work are the containment pallets that prevent the leak actually becoming a spill. When the drums or barrels leak, they will leak into a reservoir in the bottom of the pallet. This will contain as much chemical as are in the drums placed on them. This chemical will stay in the leak proof polyethylene until cleaned out.

The recovery of a leak, when a containment pallet is used is quite different. The leaking container, on the pallet, is moved to a cleaning area. The leaking drum or barrel is drained into another barrel or drum and placed back into service. The pallet is drained and cleaned to make it ready for reuse. The neutralization of this pallet is easier and can be accomplished more efficiently than an entire production area.

The best way to handle any spill is before it happens. These spill containment pallets are strong and non reactive. They will come in caution colors and have a profile that is hard to miss. Safety around chemicals should be job one in any area that has chemicals and this systems helps you and your employees to stay safe.
