Chimneys had been used in the heaters before. They are primarily used for ventilation. Now, a newer version no longer requires chimney but can still work. Instead, they ventilate heat through a narrow tube at the back of the house.
The second component is called the boiler. This is commonly used when the intermediary is a steam. This serves as both the heater and the boiler. One advantage it has is that one can also tap his warm water system and heating system here. It can provide both hot water and humid temperature. Its disadvantage is that when it is broken, one lose both his hot water system and heater.
There are some controversies for the boiler. Since it is not regulated by the EPA, its emission tend to bother neighbors. As a remedy, the municipalities and different states provided their own regulation. Now, there is a voluntary emission standard in place.
