The thermometer is a glass bulb attached to a fine tube of glass with a numbered scale and contains a liquid such as mercury or colored alcohol that is sealed in and rises and falls with changes in temperature is a tool used to measure body and environment temperature. Homes as well different fields of studies utilized this measuring device for various purposes. As such, many different types are manufactured and used in specific fields making it the more difficult to choose which one will suit ones needs.

From its original purpose of measuring body temperature, thermometer uses have increased and varied tremendously. Homes as well as different scientific field are known to sue this device in order to measure body temperature and environment temperature respectively. Such date are used in observations and gathering information. Some of this device’s common uses include scientific experiments to control the temperature as a variable, to see how hot food is, or to measure the weather and wind chill.

Sixteen types of thermometers are available in the market to choose from, but only four types are mostly used and employed by many. One of these four types is the outdoor thermometer which is mostly used for experiments and observation. It is used to measure the temperature of the surrounding identified through the expansion and contraction of a liquid. Another type is the clinical thermometer which is the standard thermometer known to us. This is being used to measure body temperature of a person and can either be tympanic or oral. Tympanic types get temperature through the ear while the oral types are kept underarm to measure temperature.

Thermostats are another commonly used type of thermometers. Using the expansion and contraction of solids to measure temperature, these devices are used to identify the temperature in an appliance or switch appliances on or off at a preset temperature. Lastly are thermocouples, which, instead of using the expansion or contraction of a solid, liquid, or gas, use electricity to measure temperature. These devices are useful for measuring very high temperatures in places where people cannot go such as inside a kiln or blast furnace. They can also be connected to a computer to record the temperature.

With all the different types of thermometers available, many find it difficult to choose the most appropriate one. Among the first things to look at is the accuracy. No data is considered better than acquiring wrong data. How fast can the thermometer measure the temperature is another important point to consider. This is essential in cooking wherein time is of the essence. Calibration, ease of use, price, sturdiness, timer, and warranty are other factors that should be looked upon before choosing.

Almost all people around the world, no matter the position or title, have in one way or another used a thermometer. Being used from the time of Galileo, this measuring device is a sure must have.
