5 Things To Keep In Mind Immediately Following A Car Accident
By Ben Smith
Chances are we’ll all be involved in some sort of car accident in our lives. Whether it’s minor or major is largely left up to circumstance. There are several steps you should take, no matter how big or small the accident is and no matter if it’s your fault or the other guy’s. Take care of the following five steps before you get the provider of your Long Island auto insurance on the phone:
1. Check Yourself and Passengers for Injury – remember to always check yourself out before looking to others. You won’t be helping the friends and loved ones you’re trying to assist if you pass out from blood loss before you can even call the ambulance. First see if you’re injuries aren’t life-threatening, then you can assist others. Call the paramedics if anyone is badly hurt.
2. Check Your Vehicle for Smoke and Fire – if your vehicle slammed into something in front of you, chances are you’ll notice a fire in the engine right away. If you were rear-ended you may have to get out to determine if smoke or flame is coming out from under the vehicle. Once you’ve determined how badly injured everyone in your vehicle is, the next step should be to determine if there is any immediate danger to staying where you are. If fire or smoke is detected, evacuate the vehicle immediately, taking extra care with anyone with broken bones.
3. Follow Steps 1 and 2 for Other Parties – after everyone with you has gotten to safety you should check out the other vehicles involved in the accident. Wait until they give you permission before helping them. There are opportunists out there who will sue their rescuer if they get hurt in the evacuation. After you’ve received permission or you see they are incapacitated assist them however you can, then let them know help is on the way once they rouse.
4. Trade Insurance Information – swap Massapequa insurance and contact information with the other driver as soon as both of you are able. This sharing of information will help your respective insurance companies sort everything out on the back-end, resulting in a faster claims process.
5. Take Photos if Safe to Do – if you’re physically able and you have the time, get photos of the crash scene. The more you can get of your vehicle, the other driver’s vehicle, and anything else relevant to the accident, the better. Any injuries you or your loved ones have suffered should be photographed if safe to do so. This kind of evidence can help your insurance company.
By following these steps you will help to insure you and your passengers’ well-being, as well as making it easier for the first responders and the insurance companies involved. Your proper conduct can only help matters for you and your Long Island car insurance provider.
