These are tough times, and you’ve got some tough choices to make: the career you’d really like and/or the one that’s got the best prospects for you … and what you need to study to make the best start in that career. We at notgoingtouni.co.uk are here to let you know what options you’ve got in addition to the traditional route from school to university to the job market.

Let’s have a look at the banking and financial sector. Believe it or not London is still the world’s top financial city (alongside New York) and there is still a great deal of activity and hiring going on! Yes the industry has been hit by the economic downturn however there still seems to be some optimism towards future growth.

Even though there are thousands of positions available in banking and finance, there’s no law that says you have to sit there cashing cheques and taking deposits all day. You’ve got plenty of choice when it comes to other positions in building societies, or commercial and investment banks.

And what kind of opportunities are out there waiting for you? There’s:

Retail banking, where general financial services are offered to small businesses and the general public by high street banks;

Investment banking – these provide more specialized services to commercial & industrial companies, governments, pension providers, etc;

Private banking – for mega-rich private customers and a few corporate customers;

Actuarial – these companies are involved in the areas of pensions and risk and are often insurance based companies

Insurance brokers – analyze what type of cover you require and negotiate with the insurance companies on your behalf;

Underwriters – specialising in risk analysis, they calculate the insurance premuims payable for those risks.

What are the companies in the financial sector looking for?
