We all want a magic formula to lose weight. We’d love to discover a pill that would allow us to live longer, healthier lives. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to good health. You can live longer with diet and exercise, not with gimmick diets or magic powders.
This is disappointing to a lot of people. After all, there’s nothing easy or fun about sticking to a healthy diet or exercising on a regular basis. People want instant results. They forget that it took a lifetime to build up their weight and unhealthy habits. The damage can’t be reversed in a week.
But those who do eat a balanced diet of vegetables, grains, lean meats and fruit, and also exercise regularly, will drop those extra pounds, strengthen their muscles, improve their self-esteem and, generally, live a happier and healthier life. Losing weight and living healthy still takes the same formula: Burn more calories. Take in fewer.
If you do want to live longer and healthier, begin by changing your diet. A healthy diet can do wonders for your body. Make sure to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat lean meat instead of fatty fast-food burgers. Don’t drink sugary beverages. And lay off the alcohol.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to feel like a chore. If you love hamburgers, you can still eat them even when you’re dieting. You just have to make sure you don’t eat them as often. Limit yourself to one hamburger a week, but don’t try to completely eliminate a favorite food from your diet.
Don’t be tempted to follow a trendy diet plan, either. You may lose weight while following a plan. But what happens once you leave the diet plan? That weight comes back. It’s impossible to follow most diet plans for a long time. But eating healthy is something you can do for your entire life.
Eating a well-balanced diet is a great start toward living a longer and healthier life. However, you’ll see results far more quickly if you incorporate regular exercise, too, into your lifestyle. By exercising, you’ll burn away excess pounds in less time.
When setting up an exercise plan, though, don’t push your body too hard too soon. You may want to start with some lower impact exercises, such as long walks, bicycle rides or yoga classes.
After mastering these low-impact exercises, you can increase the frequency and intensity of your workouts. You might incorporate free weights into your workout plan. Maybe you can jog four miles a night. You might sign up for an intense aerobics class at your local YMCA.
It’s never easy to commit to a lifestyle of healthy eating and regular exercise. But the rewards for those who do so are immense.
