A sedation dentist can be thought of as the pharmacist or anesthesiologist at the hospital. A sedation dentist knows the in’s and out’s of pain medication and how to properly put a dental patient to sleep. Mostly a sedation dentist works with dental cosmetic surgeries or other dental surgeries. A sedation dentist must know how to numb dental pain locally and generally.

Often, a cosmetic dentistry is where you’ll find a sedation dentist. And a lot of the time a cosmetic dentist will also have the training of a sedation dentist so that the cosmetic dentist can do both jobs at once while performing a cosmetic dental surgery.

Most of the work a sedation dentist does is to numb dental pain locally. However, a sedation dentist will also need to put a dental patient to sleep. Two examples of a dental surgery where a sedation dentist would put their dental patient to sleep is for removing wisdom teeth that have not yet come through the gums. The second example of a sedation dentist putting a dental patient to sleep so that pain can easily be managed is during a teeth implant surgery. Teeth implants is a dental procedure that includes drilling into the jaw bone to anchor the teeth which requires a sedation dentist to use more than just local pain medication. Putting a dental patient to sleep during such dental surgeries will also help the dentist perform their surgery more quickly and easily as the dental patient will be a-sleep and not moving to inhibit any dental procedures.

A sedation dentist is a new thing with today’s technology. It used to be that there wasn’t much to do for pain except grin and bear it. Now more dentistry work and cosmetic dentistry procedures can be performed with the ease of pain medication and sleep inducing sedation drugs.

For dental patients that have an intense phobia of the dentist office, a sedation dentist may be necessary just for a general dental cleaning to be performed. In this case, a sedation dentist would be helping a dentist perform the necessary duties for the dental patients general oral health.

Another example of a sedation dentist is in the case of children dental patients who need to have a more complicated procedure done for their dental health. This young little dental patients may not keep their mouth open for a dentist to do his/her job so that local pain-killer from the sedation dentist would not work. Usually a sedation dentist will use a gas mask for dental children patients who are a little older. But, let’s say you have a two-year old or three-year old who needs to have a decayed tooth removed, but won’t open their mouth for the sedation dentist to see. Putting such young dental patients to sleep for a dental procedure requires special training from a sedation dentist to know the proper pain-killer to put young patients to sleep without affecting their health with the sleep medication.
