How Is Van Insurance Different From Personal Car Insurance?

By Scott Kelly

Depending on the primary use of your van, buying specialized van insurance may be in your best interest. This type of insurance offers different coverage for the vehicle, its contents, and its potential liability that differs from that offered for the regular family car.

Remember that there will be certain environmental issues that can cost you more when shopping for your insurance. The primary purpose of the van will determine the level of risk while the statistics associated with the primary purpose will determine whether environmental factors will create a level of risk determined to be significant. For instance, if you use the van every day to drive teenagers who live at a school for violent or emotionally disturbed youth, the insurance company will consider this a high risk factor for vandalism, especially if you park it there overnight.

Unless you are using your van to transport all kinds of different hazardous materials you shouldn’t be finding a huge difference in the premium. You might find that you need a little extra coverage if your van is used for the transport of physically challenged individuals. Wheelchair lift equipment is usually insured right along with the van if it is part of the vehicle’s primary job.

If you tend to use your van more often for family drives, you shouldn’t have much difficulty listing its primary use as family transportation. How you use it occasionally shouldn’t impact the premium much unless you’re transporting materials that will require special containment.

Shop around. Because most families have switched to the convenience and space of the minivan, you should be able to negotiate your van insurance premium. If you have a really poor driver history you might not be able to negotiate much.

However, a clean record and a van that is newer, safer, and well maintained should be easier to insure at a great rate. Vans are no longer common among households, which means that you end up with the bargaining chip in your favor. Reasonably priced van insurance and a policy which adequately covers the various aspects of its duties is a simple essential that you shouldn’t have to compromise on.
