As the current financial situation continues a lot of us have needed to tighten the purse strings even more. A lot of people who have never thought about planning a budget in order to manage their finances are now doing so. However if like others you haven’t had to create a budget before knowing where to start can prove difficult. But we hope that our 5 quick tips to manage your budget may help you to get started.

Tip 1 – Knowing Your Income

It is vital that before anything else happens that you know exactly how much money you have coming in each month. The best way of doing this is to actually look at your income over the previous months. When it comes to estimating how much income you have it is far better to under rather than over estimate it and certainly don’t be worried about coming up with an exact figure. But what you shouldn’t do is just use any figure that pops into your head when you are creating your budget as this will only make it completely worthless.

Tip 2 – Now Is Not The Time To Panic

Before you have finished creating your budget you shouldn’t actually be attempting to cut back on what you are spending your money on. If you do then you won’t be able to see what areas of your budget you are spending too much money on. So of course making a decision about where you need to start cutting back will then become a lot harder.

Tip 3 – Know Your Bottom Line

After you have deducted all the money that you pay out each month from your income you may find that you are beginning to panic because you don’t seem to have a lot left over. But instead now is the time to take some deep breaths and start to look more closely at what the money you have coming in is being spent on and eliminate items that are not necessary. For example if you are a member of gym that you don’t go to very often then cancel it.

Tip 4 – Creating Excess

With this one of our 5 quick tips to manage your budget we recommend that you start to cut out those meals you purchase whilst at work or going for a quick drink after work. Instead the money that you would normally spend on these items you should be putting away for use when needed to cover some unexpected expenses or to provide you with a treat once a month. You may be surprised to find just how much money you are saving through cutting out these things.

Tip 5 – Stick With It

It is important that when you are creating a budget that you create one that you will be able to stick with. What’s the point of following our 5 quick tips to manage your budget if you won’t stick with the one you set yourself? Also at the end of each month it is worthwhile spending some time reviewing what has taken place and making alterations to the budget where it is needed. Eventually you are likely to start seeing that your budget provides you with a little extra cash each month that you didn’t have previously.
