Ways To Apply For A Credit Card Despite A Poor Credit Score

By Charlie Cross

You should be aware of the effect of credit score on your ability to get a credit card. Your credit history is the basis for the decision by the bank. If you have a negative credit history, it is very unlikely that you will be given a credit card.

A poor credit record indicates that you are a poor risk when it comes to paying back money. And any money you put on a credit card is essentially a loan. If you are given a credit card despite a bad credit history, often you will be charged high interest to make up for the risk of loaning you money.

Poor credit ratings will also mean that you don’t have much of a credit line. You’ll have a lower spending limit than would someone who has good credit.

If this sounds like you, and you have a bad credit history, you will probably want to start with a secured card. Be sure to take out any protection offered by the issuer also.

In a secured credit card, you have money backing up your credit limit. You have a balance in an account that is equal to the amount that you have been given as the credit limit. In some instances, you may have a lower limit than your account holds. It depends on the lender and their policies; read the applications carefully.

You can also opt to take out a joint credit account, if you have a negative credit history. To do this, you have to have a second person with good credit, usually a family member, who is willing to be on the account with you.

If they do this they are also liable for the balance, and because of this the account poses less of a risk to the lender. They figure if they can’t get paid by you they’ll have the other person pay. It’s important to pay on time and regularly though.

Check the terms and conditions of any card that you are offered. Some cards have a fee. It may be a one-time fee or it may be a yearly fee. Don’t be surprised by this; read the literature that comes with your card.
