Three Ways To Lower Your Energy Bill

By Roland Harman

While running a plumbing, heating, and air company which has serviced the Chula Vista area for decades, I often get asked for tips on how to lower energy bills. Many times, people run up some extraordinary energy bills, and this affects their quality of life as they compromise on entertainment and pleasures in order to pay the bills. Here are some tips on how to reduce those bills so that you can learn from the mistakes others have made.

The first simple thing you can do is to run the dishwasher only when you have a full load. Each load needs a fixed amount of water and electricity, so you should maximize your energy usage by cleaning as many dishes as possible per load. If you can use the energy-saving mode then that is even better. Let the dishes and utensils air dry, and keep more of your money.

Whenever possible, use cold water in the laundry machine. Since you will not be using hot water, you will be saving on your energy bills. As in the other tip for the dishwasher, do what you can to run a full load in the washing machine. If you live in area where it is okay to air dry your clothes then you can help your cause by using the dryer less. The air-drying may be not be a realistic suggestion for your situation, but washing clothes with cold water can be something simple and easy to remember.

Last, consider making reminders for yourself to unplug appliances which use a good amount of electricity. This is because the appliances use electricity even when they are not in use! Many people do not understand this; but it is true. Having the discipline to unplug appliances when not in use can make a noticeable savings, especially when calculated over the course of a year.

Here is how you can give yourself enough motivation to follow these, and other, energy-saving tips. Take the difference in your energy bill from the previous month (or from the same month a year ago), and take a moment to notice any significant savings. Once you identify the savings then multiply by 12, and you will have a rough estimate of your annualized energy savings by staying disciplined. This should put a smile on your face knowing that you are keeping more of your money.
