Van insurance is somewhat different from normal car insurance, making the process of getting the insurance longer and more difficult for first-time buyers. While some of the same rules still apply, there are different options as to what you should or need to buy for type of van you have. Furthermore, extra details about the van go toward the quote for your insurance, meaning there might be extra costs you weren’t aware of in the beginning. Here is some information to aid you in your insurance investigation.
As a side note, it should be kept in mind that van age, type, your own age and experience, as well as a number of different factors will all contribute towards the end insurance quote. The first van type is the Micro van. These are vans with minimal space, essentially a normal car, though slightly extended carrying space. As such, their insurance rates are the lowest due to their small profile and lighter weights. The next grade up is the Small van, which is identical to the Micro van, but has a further expanded carrying area, such as a raised roof.
Medium vans, sometimes known as panel vans, have a larger area for packages and cargo and often have rear and side doors, making them proper vans and as such, require higher rates due to their increased weight and unwieldy size compared to cars. Large vans are essentially bigger panel vans and have an expanded carrying area and sometimes two pairs of wheels at the rear, instead of one pair.
Car-derived vans are simply cars with their windows filled in and pickup trucks can be classed as vans if their open area is used for cargo.
After the process of deciding which van you have and going through the rigors of processing the age, mileage and quality of the van, it is important to choose an appropriate insurance type. These are generally the normal auto insurance, which information is available in plenty of locations on the internet.
