A Fun Day In L.A. With Your Daughter

By Marquerite Velasquez

Every now and then, it is a fantastic idea to break out of our daily schedule and plan a special day just for you and your daughter. If you live in the Los Angeles area, consider yourself lucky because there are tons of interesting places to visit and enjoy. Here are a few suggestions of where to go and what to do for your Mom-Daughter Day Out.

If you and your girl enjoy outdoor adventures, consider planning a day of fun in Santa Monica or perhaps Marina Del Rey. In Santa Monica, you can enjoy the carnival atmosphere of the pier, riding the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel and visiting the arcade. You can also rent or bring bikes and enjoy the 26 miles of bike paths the city has to offer. Roller skating would be another way to enjoy these paths. In Marina Del Rey, you could rent stand-up paddleboards or a kayak or just laze around at Mother’s Beach, which also has a playground.

If you prefer shopping until you drop, steer away from the humdrum mall offerings and drive down to the Melrose Avenue shopping district. There are plenty of fancy shops around, but the cool factor is really in the vintage shops that sell everything from clothes to furniture. If your daughter loves American Girls, then head to The Grove instead. This outdoor mall features the Los Angeles location of the American Girl Place. You can shop for doll clothes, check out the doll displays, eat a fancy lunch at the caf and even take your doll to the salon for a new hairdo.

If you are hoping to inject a bit of culture into your daughter’s life, there are several wonderful places to visit in the Los Angeles area. In the picturesque town of San Marino, for instance, you will find the Huntington Library and Gardens, which include a library filled with millions of volumes of books. But perhaps of more interest will be the collections of artwork and 14 different gardens, ranging from the serenity of the Japanese Garden to the Monet-esque beauty of the lily ponds or the bursts of color in the Shakespeare Garden. There is also a Children’s Garden, and a visit would not be complete without lunch at the Rose Garden Tea Room where you can enjoy finger sandwiches, fresh fruit, freshly baked scones and plenty of gently steeped tea.

Other cultural options include a visit to Exposition Park in South Los Angeles. This park includes the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the Exposition Park Rose Garden, the California African American Museum and the California Science Center, which now displays the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The Page Museum, better known as the La Brea Tar Pits, is another L.A.-area option, and it’s also within walking distance of the L.A. Country Museum of Art and the Craft and Folk Art Museum.

A day without dessert is hardly a special occasion, so when you and your daughter feel the need for a sugar rush, consider heading to the premier ice cream shop in Culver City, Yo Ku Mon. This is a dessert stop like no other and features delectable shaved ice and a dozen flavors of ice cream as well as offering huge, freshly baked cookies. The highlight of a trip to Yo Ku Mon is creating your own custom ice cream sandwiches. You can select any two types of cookies and whatever flavor of ice cream you want to create this gourmet ice cream sandwich.
