In previous years, it was widely believed that mangosteen was safe for everyone. Adults and children, with rare exception, could take it without incident or medical interaction.

When the medical community did complain about it, it was mainly to point out how many people were taking it instead of medicine they needed. In some cases, they would forgo life-saving treatment, foolishly expecting the fruit to effect a miracle cure.

Now, we know better. It is not as safe as has been believed. Taking this can reduce the production of essential fats in the body. In someone who does not have weight to lose, this can be quite dangerous.

This is because fats, aka lipids, are a significant fuel source for your body. There are also possible dangers associated with the use of this fruit for immunodeficiency disorders.

In fact, some reports show that this popular antioxidant may actually interfere with the effectiveness of some cancer treatments including radiation and chemotherapy. Diabetics, also, have been advised to be careful with it, as it is not sugar-free.

It also goes bad quickly. To extend its shelf life, many manufacturers add stabilizers or preservatives. This is because unless you take it in its natural state, it has no therapeutic effect.

Unfortunately, some stabilizers and preservatives come with side effects. In fact, some side effects and drug interactions associated with it may be triggered by additives rather than by the fruit itself.

That’s not the only reason to be careful if you are going to take mangosteen. This product also blocks the histamines that occur naturally in your body. Histamines have a role in allergies, it is true, and have somewhat of a bad rap. However, they are actually very important chemicals that serve important tasks. First, when you are injured they help increase blood flow to the injured area. Secondly, they have an effect in several essential metabolic responses. If you block histamine production, you can really cause some medical problems for yourself.
