A person who suffers from anorexia nervosa drastically restricts calories in order to reach an ideal weight. This is one of the most common eating disorders.

What makes this control of calories and food destructive is that the ideal weight being sought is generally far below a truly healthy weight. If you are anorexic, you need treatment. It can be seriously unhealthy, or even life-threatening, to be anorexic.

You can live a normal and healthy life. People do get better from this condition. Here are some treatment options that may help.

One of the most important treatments for anorexia nervosa is family behavioral therapy. In this therapy, the family works with the person who is anorexic to help them gain weight. Generally this includes taking control of food and eating. Eventually when the person is recovered from anorexia control of food choices is returned to them.

Generally, parents will also learn how to prepare foods and help the anorexic child deal more constructively with hunger.
