There are various types of menopause herbal remedies, but trying to make your mind up which one is suitable for you might prove to be a demanding job. With so much information on the internet the task can be overwhelming. Sorting through all this information is most likely one of the last things you would like to do right now. The following commentary will take a look at some of the most common menopause herbal remedies with a short discussion on each one. I won’t be discussing hormone replacement therapy at this point because if you are investigating natural treatments you may already be informed of the risks related with HRT.

There are many black cohosh products on the marketplace now claiming to give hot flash relief. Black cohosh has been used to treat gynecological disorders, rheumatism, sore throat, and all kinds of ailments. I like Black cohosh but I would not endorse it for hot flash relief. A number of studies have already shown that it has little or no effect on hot flashes over a placebo, take a look at this article (www(dot)nia.nih.gov/NewsAndEvents/PressReleases/PR20061218HALT), also some off-putting side effects were talked about, such as weight problems, gas, headaches, stomach discomfort. When answering some questions on black cohosh and asked how it does work the NIH website said “The possibility that black cohosh exhibits estrogenic activity has been studied but the evidence is contradictory”.

Soy is another one of the well-known menopause herbal remedies. In recent years it looks a lot of people are promoting soy as a health food. And what was once considered a “poor man’s meat” because of perceived poor protein quality at the time has skyrocketed in popularity. I personally like some of the vegetarian soy meals found at the supermarket some are totally tasty. You have to take into account that while soy products claim to balance hormones, soy products add hormones via isoflavonoides and not lignans. Isoflavonoids have come under criticism for use with infants and adults and have been said to cause cancer, not stop cancer like lignans. This is a controversial topic so that is all I will say on the matter; you can read a nice article here www(dot)nutritionj.com/content/7/1/17. I think soy could relieve hot flashes to some measure but how much can you safely eat and how much do you have to eat to get 100% or even 50% relief I think is unrealistic.

Flaxseed like soy you would possibly have to have considerable amounts to acquire significant hot flash relief, though I think less with flaxseed because I believe flax lignans are more powerful than soy isoflavonoides. I think flaxseed would be the number one menopause herbal remedy if it were not for the constipation or diarrhea that many women get from ingesting substantial volumes of it. You can read about the study done by the Mayo Clinic here (www(dot)mayoclinic.org/news2007-rst/4208.html). Essentially women who completed the program experienced an remarkable 57% decrease in hot flash symptoms. Many women did not even complete the trial. They were taking 40 grams per day of flaxseed so that is quite a lot of fiber, accordingly such a program is unrealistic for most women over long periods of time.

There is a menopause supplement in capsule form on the market called FemFlax that uses concentrated powered made from the outer flax hull (the part that contains the highest concentration of beneficial lignans). Many women are reporting up to 100% relief but without the negative side effects of constipation and diarrhea that you might get from eating considerable quantities of flaxseed in its whole form.
