The Easy Way To Wean Your Baby

By Lucy Tucker

As your baby moves on to the stage of being given solids, you will find out very quickly that it works best when they are starving, and it doesn’t work at all when they are tired, irritated and whingy. It might seem a good idea to give them a flavour they like first, but you will then find they aren’t interested in any new taste you offer them after. Why not add the new flavours to a flavour you know they enjoy, and then follow that by feeding them the new by itself, and first.

It’s effortless and far better if you can cook fresh food for your baby and not use jars of pre cooked food. This is not difficult mainly because to begin with you just have to cook one reliable meal at the start of the week and freeze them in small portions. Cook the veggies and fruit, then puree them in a food processor and put them into an ice cube tray and freeze them. Then put them in labeled bags or containers inside the freezer.

When you introduce a new flavor for your baby they may well not like it. This is normal. Some parents may perhaps consider that if a little one doesn’t like a particular flavour the first time then it’s very best not to give that food again for several weeks. it’s much better to attempt to give it to them for 3 or 4 consecutive meals. Typically they will react a little more positively at every single meal as they get used to the taste.

It’s too easy to fall into the trap of never giving your child a particular food because you don’t like it yourself. This condemns a child to never trying it for the rest of their lives, when they will eat it up perfectly cheerfully if you give it to them as a baby. Don’t be afraid of bringing in spices quite early, but you need to be very careful about salt levels. If you follow this principle, then you will help your children to grow up eating almost anything, and this makes the business of ensuring they have a balanced diet as they grow up so much easier.

Children don’t always like spoons, and sometimes they will refuse to eat off them. Don’t be put off by this, as it may be the spoon and not the food they don’t like. A simple solution may be just to change the spoon, and a good idea is to let the child smell the food they are about to eat.

Cold food is sensible food. Hot food can make a baby refuse to eat if only cold food is available. babies should be allowed to try to help themselves even if it means food everywhere from squashed between their fingers to rubbed all over their angelic faces. You’ll get a laugh, great memories and if you’re sensible wonderful photographs. Your baby will simply have a whale of a time.

If a child can sit up in a high chair, then mealtimes need to become family affairs. At least once a day the whole family should eat together. Children learn by watching so good examples such as clean plates, and good table manners need to be started early.

Lucy Tucker is a Health Professional with a particular interest in childrens nutrition and hopes that all new mothers will prepare their baby’s food at home and not shop bought. You need the best baby food processor to do this, and one she recommends is the Kidco Babysteps Electric Food Mill. It is not expensive and does everything you will need for your baby
