Professionals who specialize in the study of nutrition, deficiency and challenges of nutrition that a human being or a society comes across are called Nutritionists. Their job profile deals with planning food and nutritional programs, supervising how a meal has been prepared and also how the meal is served. They generally consider an individual as a whole and don’t concentrate only on the individual’s deficiency or problem.
Keeping public health in mind, they also recommend the correct nutrition for a community and work on the requirements and the sources of nutrients from that environment. They do a lot of research on various health models in different conditions to have a better study of their patients and help them be fit.
In an hospital or a educational environment, the nutritionists are termed as dietitians. They interact and work with individual patients. In health facilities they prepare or design food programs according to the diets required. In schools they are one of the staffs who have extra interest in the health of a student in assisting their balanced diets.
If a patient has high deficiency and failure to fight against any disease, it is a challenging task for nutritionists. To control heart problems or obesity issues a nutritionist plays a vital role along with a general practitioner. Sometimes they also use homeopathic techniques in their diet depending on the requirements.
It is essential to always co operate with a nutritionist, as they care about our well being. In order to study our history better they generally request us to maintain a daily log with the type of food intake we usually take, a survey of the various symptoms that we come across, a report on stress levels and mood swings and many more. They might also provide us with some materials to educate ourselves. This should not be neglected and must be taken seriously.
To qualify or start a career as a nutritionist or dietitian a bachelors degree is required in food and nutrition, food services management, institutional management or related areas. Generally students specializing in this field concentrate on courses in food, chemistry, biology and so on.
Not all dietitians can practice as “RD” (Registered Dietitians). This credential is provided by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. The definition for a nutritionist varies in each state. In some, anyone can call themselves nutritionists regardless of their education while in others a proper training and a recognized certification would be required.
They concentrate on the sources of nutrition, deficiencies in nutrition, health conditions of an individual.
