Very Low Calorie Diets – What You Should Know About Them
By Ron Stucky
It would seem to be logical that very low calorie diets would help you to lose weight, but before you try such a diet it’s good to learn as much about them as you can. These type of diets can be effective if you’re careful, and preferably under a doctor’s supervision, but they aren’t healthy for everyone. We will be taking an in depth view of these extreme diets, and figure out the plus side and see if there are any deficits as well.
You must consult your doctor before you think about going on a very low calorie diet. This kind of diet can be dangerous for some people, like women who are pregnant, the elderly, children or those with medical conditions.
In the 1930s, Walter Kempner founded the Rice Diet, which was primarily used to aid specific illnesses, like hypertension and kidney diseases. This particular diet can also help some people shed a few pounds. Rice is not the only food you consume in this food regimen, but you better like it; because it is required with all that you eat. The advantage of the Rice Diet is that it cuts out processed foods, and is extremely low in fat, salt and sugar. However, this diet is on the severe side and will not be a diet that most will use long term.
All over the world the diet OPTIFAST is used by hospitals as a very low calorie diet. This is a diet that was developed especially for people who are at least 50 pounds overweight, or who have a BMI (body mass index) of over 30. You should not consider this diet if you are only slightly overweight. You and your progress are monitored in a medical setting on the OPTIFAST diet, which is an advantage. Because the program has been around since 1974 loads of people have done it, giving it a solid track record for both effectiveness and safety. Making serious changes to your life and diet are things you will have to do if you want to be serious about this diet.
You are pretty much only offered two preferences when you choose one of these extreme diets. You can purchase products already prepackaged for you; or you can take it upon yourself to control your calorie consumption. The second preference will certainly be less demanding; but will require a more attentive respect for your eating habits. Foods with elevated calorie levels will need to be eaten with great rarity. You can always replace those foods with healthier, low fat options like rice cakes, fruits and vegetables and such. You have to be careful with carbohydrates, so try eating bread made from sprouted wheat rather than refined flours. High fructose corn syrup is one thing you should keep away from, as well as treated sugars.
To sum things up, if you need to lose some weight and your local health care provider says you are healthy enough to do it; you may consider one of these low cal food regimens. There are a couple of alternatives, some that we have viewed in this piece. There is a myriad of choices out there, all open for consideration; just remember to check out your options and take heed to testimonials and related stories.
