Planning Your Wedding

By Miri Maon

How about we say “I, Do”

Weddings are those occasions that are both joyous and tear jerking at the same time. It brings family and friends together, heal old wounds as well as mark the beginning for two near and dear to everyone in attendance. Weddings are one of the few occasions that prompt people to mark their calendar quickly. The anticipation level climbs for all as the day approaches. For the event to come off like clockwork, takes great planning and coordinating. You may hit a few speed bumps along the way but good planning will take you over those aberrations successfully.

Everything starts with a plan.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, you have to start with a plan if you wish to be successful in life you have to have a plan. Sure, you may get lucky once without having a plan but believe me that will be the exception rather than the rule. Once your shock and euphoria have subsided, it will be time to start formulating plans for your wedding. Your basic wedding plan should include: desired date, Location, Time, Church or no church, Guest list, Reception, Honeymoon, and How do we pay for it all? Stay organized and keep your outline and wedding plan data in a file or do what my father did when my sister was getting married. He bought a separate file cabinet just for her wedding. Nothing else in his life rated a file cabinet except his daughter’s wedding.

It is all in the details

Once your basic plan is in place, it is time to get into the details. The first three are pretty straight forward and do not require much discussion. As for the question of church or no church. My grandmother always said even if you do not go to church, everyone should marry in the church and when you die, be buried from the church. I’m not sure she had a rule for those that attend Temple. Regarding the guest list, this could be tricky and you may find yourself generating at least two. The first list will be the absolutely have to invite list and the second will be the ones we would like to invite list. The reception will require lots of planning – location, menu, entertainment, photographer, seating, centerpieces and who is in charge of making sure everyone leaves on time so you do not get charged for another hour of hall rental. For the honeymoon – even if it is a weekend away, there will be reservations of some kind, travel tickets or a Rand McNally map, alternate transportation, packing and coordinating leaving the reception.

The Big Day

The preparations have been made and the tuxedo’s rented. The bridesmaids are wondering where they would ever wear that dress again and the parents of the bride and groom are wondering if their children made the right decision to marry. The grooms men are hoping they make it from the bachelor party to the church on time everyone is wondering if anyone will take the opportunity “to object” when asked. There is nothing more you can do except to let the day begin and hope it ends well.

Lets party!

Wedding receptions and any party that follows are always a lot of fun. For some they are family reunions and for others they are the first meeting of a couple that will eventually marry. A lot of the times the guests can be more entertaining than anything you could ever book. If everyone behaves themselves and Aunt Sue stays away from the scotch bottle, the wedding and reception will be a wonderful and joyous occasion for all.
