Trying to keep up with the Cafe Scene in Christchurch? Try these two great cafes
By Daniel Hogan
The Herb Centre; This relaxing place is composed of a cute corner cafe that serves principally veggie treats (you can find merely one carnivorous choice on the menus…) in addition to brews the New Zealand Coffee Awards 2009-10 Gold Award winning, New Brighton-based Switch Espresso.
Additionally it is an amazingly stocked dispensary/ health shop that includes a variety of supplements, organic body products and every essential oil you can possibly imagine, a patio garden along with a facility that delivers midwifery services, alternative addiction treatment solution, and herbal and naturopathic medicine. Phew. It truly is basically the only one-stop-shop for the granola sect within the entire city (that we know, anyway…in case your business is one, also, make sure you contact us!). It’s an alternative style cafe Christchurch should really be proud of!
The place, found on Kilmore St, is fittingly calming, with hard wood floors, significant, exposed windows which wash the area in airy light, along with the relaxing perfumes of lavender and patchouli. It’s perfectly distinctive (check out the lovable as drawings of dancing eggs around the chalkboard wall menus!) and the foods are fresh and wonderful, try the GF, dairy free Wintertime Root Veg Cake, it was a winner within my partly veggie family. Come summer months, I think the garden is going to be brimming with revellers searching for a peaceful area to relax with a cup and a socially conscious slice.
Addington Coffee Co-op; Nestled on Lincoln Rd, essential to Addington village, Addington Coffee Co-op is a quaintly deluxe, all-natural light filled cafe and roastery that spins Blondie, roasts and peddles their very own brand of Fair Trade (and DELICIOUS) coffee and is like your living room (if you’re the kind of person whose living room provides a pitch-perfect volume of understated kitsch as well as the most influencing ambience in the area).
The company, housed in a big former mechanics workshop, needed 9 months to make their own as well as quake proof (that was lucky!) which is stuffed to the top no matter what hours having an eclectic mix of fresh neo-hipsters, chatty stay-at-home-mums and expensive looking suits seeking out a cozy destination for a lunch time meeting along with excellent, fresh crafted slice, pastry or sandwich. Along with very cool and informed use of Fair Trade coffee, furthermore, they offer for sale “organic threads” manufactured by survivors of the sex-trade in Calcutta
So, to recap: their coffee is wonderful, their furnishings is perfect and their company practices are morally righteous. Need I say more?
