What’s The Difference Between Miracle Whip And Mayonnaise

Ever wondered what the difference is between mayonnaise and Miracle Whip? I was interested in finding out what exactly is in Miracle Whip why I’m not so crazy about it but some others are. Back in 1756 when French ruler French under Louis Franois Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu, captured Mahn on the Spanish-held island of Minorca the duc’s chef created a new dressing for his master in honor of the victory. It was called Mahonnaise. However, it didn’t reach America until 1905 when Richard Hellmann’s New York deli offered it.

More than 25 years later Miracle Whip made its debut at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Charles Chapman is the man who evenly blended regular mayonnaise with cheaper dressings and more than 20 different spices plus sugar to create what is now known as Miracle Whip. So it is basically like a salad dressing that uses mayo and contains some other ingredients to make the taste sweeter. Kraft claims that they came up with Miracle whip from their own experimentation, but there are others who claim that it was sold to the company by an Illinoise caf owner back in 1931.

Mayonnaise is usually the base for a wide variety of salad dressings and sandwich spreads. Its primary ingredients are: raw egg yolks, oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and spices. Mayo is not only sold by companies but people also make it at home adding their own touch and flavor. It is available in a lot of locations around the world. Despite the differences in how it’s made and the added ingredients into the recipe, which can vary depending on the geographical region, it is still largely the same.

Some of the common dishes made in the states using mayonnaise are Cucumber crab slaw, potato salad, salmon salad, egg salad, macaroni salad and tuna fish spread, just to name a few. In Western Europe mayo is often served with French fries or chips. This is especially found in Belgium and the Netherleands. Mayo is also served with hard-boiled eggs or cold chicken in France, the UK, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and the Netherlands. Since mayonnaise became widely accessible in the 80s Chileans have used it on hot dogs, French fries, loco and boiled chopped potatoes which is a salad commonly known as papas mayo. Chile is the world’s third major per capita consumer of mayonnaise. Latin America is the first. In Russia, where mayo is quite popular, they make it with sunflower seed oil giving it a very distinctive flavor. Russia is the only market in Europe where more mayo is sold than ketchup by volume.

The main difference between mayo and Miracle Whip and mayonnaise are the sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and sugar. They are the fourth and fifth ingredients of Miracle Whip. Mayo is sold by a wide variety of companies while miracle whip is only sold by Kraft. In one form or another mayonnaise is very popular all around the world while Miracle Whip is largely popular in Canada. If you prefer mayonnaise you know that Hellman’s offers quality mayo.
