When you visit a children’s birthday part it is surprising to see them playing the same games that we did when we were their age. Every single one of the classic old school party games that we played not only have a certain charm about them but add a touch of excitement to any party. The great thing about these kinds of party games is that they don’t need a lot of preparation beforehand and can be played by both children and adults.

Below we take a look at what we consider to be some of the most popular of all the classic old school party games that people enjoy playing today.

Game 1 – Hot Potato

In order to play this game you need either a small ball, stone or of course a small potato and can be played by no less than 6 people but also by as many as 30. Those who are playing will sit on the floor in a circle facing inwards. You now choose someone to be the leader and they will step into the middle. They close their eyes and as the object you have chosen to act as the potato is passed around they determine when to say “HOT”. As soon as they do say this the person holding it is out. This carries on until there is only one person left and they will be crowned the winner. If you have a large group of friends playing this particular old school party game you could of course split it up into two games if you wish.

Game 2 – Charades

When playing this party game it isn’t only funny but also very exciting. Just like the other games we mention this one can be played by as few as 10 people or as many as 30. However before the fun can commence you need to divide those playing in the game into two groups. Once this has done then the fun can begin. Each team chooses a member of theirs to pick a piece of paper on which the title of a film, book, TV show or musical has been written and then they need to act it out without the use of words. You can either have the titles all ready written on pieces of paper before your guests arrive or you can ask them to provide some for you. Of course the team that is crowned the winners is the ones that guess the most charades right.

Game 3 – Pass The Parcel

Not only was this one of the most popular classic old school party games that we enjoyed when we were children but is still proving popular with children today. This is one of the simplest of all party games to play. Again those participating in it need to sit in a circle and then a parcel is given to them to pass around as music plays. As soon as the music stops the person that has hold of the parcel which is often wrapped in newspaper is allowed to remove a layer and retrieve the prize from inside it. Then as soon as they have finished unwrapping their layer of the parcel the music starts up once more. The game continues to be played in this way until the final layer of wrapping is removed and the final prize is revealed.

When it comes to playing this one of the classic old school party games remember to make sure that who is ever in charge of the music ensures that every child involved in the game has a chance to unwrap the parcel. What you do not want to end up with is unhappy children because they never received a prize.
